And Port Scanning, you achieve with a wonderful tool called nmap.
If you are running ubuntu, just: apt-get install nmap

There are enough nmap tutorials out there (just google it), and I feel anything I say about it would not make it justice.

I recently installed Ubuntu and was hoping to see what all the fuss was about with bash and all, but have found nothing other than noobs showing off scripts I figured out a week into using Linux.  I read it can be used for port scanning, where could I find info on that?</description>
